Sulfonated asphaltite

This reagent represents partially water soluble multifunctional reagent on bituminous base.

Main functions and properties

  • reduces risk of borehole caving in unstable formation intervals (claystone) by means of colmatation of microcracks by fine oil-soluble part of reagent;
  • improves lubricating capacity of mud (reduces adhesiveness of filter cake);
  • decreases water loss of mud, decreases dispersability of cuttings during drilling
  • is the emulgator during drilling mud treatment by hydrocarbons (oil).

Engineering recommendations

Reagent represents free-flowing unsintered powder of dark brown color and can be added at a well-chosen moment directly to mud preparation system through hopper or directly to container with preparing mud. This reagent does not influence on working capacity of most polymers used in drilling practice. Preferably to add reagent at startup of mud preparation in concentration provided by program.

Reagent can cause some foaming therefore it is necessary to have antifoaming additive.

Sulfonated asphaltite can be used as a component of majority water based muds regardless of natural (PAC, CMC, starch, xanthan gum) or synthetic (PHPA) origin of mud components, and also effective during its use in hydrocarbon based muds.

For the attention of drilling muds engineer

  • When reagent enters to mud it paints it to dark color.
  • When adding reagent to mud containing enough quantity of solid phase, whether it be bentonite or worked sludge, there happens mud rheology downfall and small mud thinning. Sulfonated asphalt interacts only with solid phase and does not exert influence on polymers. It is recommended to add reagent at initial preparation of mud with subsequent permanent dosing of reagent in concentration provided by program.
  • Before adding additive to mud it is compulsory to make pilot test!

Recommended concentration

From 3 to17 kg/m3— for creation thin, firm and elastic filter cake and use as unstable formation caving inhibitor (claystone); for drilling mud filtration reducing; for drilling mud thermal stability increasing; for borehole condition improving, particularly for avoidance of differential pressure sticking.

MULTIOL

MULTIOL is complex additive for water based muds purposed for increasing ROP, stabilizing and inhibiting clay-slates. MULTIOL covers well surface and drilling equipment with hydrophobic hydrocarbon film decreasing friction and reducing balling during drilling.
